Termites #835226

Asked June 12, 2023, 2:05 PM EDT

While digging in her flower bed next to the house we started seeing some small flying insects that appeared to be ants. Based on your description, I’m thinking not. We’ve never seen them indoors but who knows what’s behind the walls. Please confirm that these are termites and the best treatment when you have a well. How aggressive are these pests. Thank You!!

Expert Response

These are termites, yes, but if they are found outdoors they won't necessarily pose a threat to the home interior, especially if you are not finding them indoors. Plenty of termites naturally nest outside and won't necessary attack the wood in a nearby structure. Plus, many predators (birds, especially) feast on winged termites when a colony reproduces, so relatively few survive to wander about and start new nests of their own.

We do not currently have an entomologist with a specialization in indoor pest control at HGIC, nor do we have local research pointing to the most effective and practical home chemical barrier options, so you may need to inquire with a few pest control professionals to get a consensus about how worthwhile or cost-effective a perimeter treatment or monitoring via bait stations may be. The additional resources linked on the termite web page above provide more science-based information about termite prevention approaches, chemical and otherwise.
