Damage to my sunburst honey locust tree #835005

Asked June 11, 2023, 10:28 AM EDT

This year my sunburst honey locust tree is not looking good. The tips of new growth are shriveling and turning black. Need an evaluation and any treatment suggestions, thanks.

Jackson County Oregon

Expert Response

Cankers and root collar rot are the major diseases of honey locusts because they can girdle the stem and kill the tree. Canker disease symptoms include sunken, dead areas of bark; dieback; reduced foliage; yellow foliage; premature fall coloration; and early leaf drop.

Have you used any herbicides near the tree? Or any weed and feed lawn applications near the tree?

Yes, the tree is within a few feet of my backyard lawn. It was infested with chinch bugs and was treated. I also applied fertilizer before that.

If the lawn applications included a formulation that "kills weeds" it may affect your tree as you have shown by the photos.
The tree will most likely recover.
You can prune off the deformed growth to encourage new growth.
