I have two white flowering cherry trees, which I thought were purely ornamental. This year they both have tons of cherries, and I was wondering if they are edible? Also, if you are able to determine which variety they are I would appreciate the information. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for your question on cherries. Ornamental cherries and pears often produce fruit. Typically these are not sweet compared to varieties we typically eat. Likely they are edible, but not very tasty. Jellies and jams, which include lots of sugar, might be the best way to consume.
There are hundreds of varieties of ornamental cherry. An accurate variety ID will be tough. This article might be helpful: https://www.tastingtable.com/971914/types-of-cherries-explained/. Given the size of the cherries in your picture, I suspect this is a sour or "pie" cherry of some kind. True ornamental cherries are usually much smaller.
I hope you find this helpful, Nicole
