Dead branches in bushes #834728

Asked June 09, 2023, 12:08 PM EDT

My two burning bushes and snowball bush all have dead branches. This hasn’t happened before. What is wrong with them? What should I do to keep them from dying? Thank you

Expert Response

Hello,

Our winter this past year was rather hard on many of our landscape plants. Fortunately, shrubs are fairly resilient, and dead branches can be pruned out without any stress to the shrub. We recommend following the dead twig/branch back to the ground or to any living green and cut it with pruners or loppers at an angle, avoiding tearing or shredding the bark on any living part of the branch. Pruning most woody plants often causes the plants to initiate growth. Look for new shoots coming up from the base of the shrub for this year's growth. We recommend good cultural care during this growing season; provide supplemental irrigation to supply 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water per week when natural precipitation doesn't happen.
