In the past few months, I have noticed that my red maple tree is losing its bark. It simply appears to be rotting off. Also, some of the branches do not have leaves and the leaves that are present have brown spots. Can you please tell me what's going on here? southern middle Tennessee area .

Good afternoon,
It appears that there is decay in the cambium layer causing the bark to fall off. This layer contains the xylem and phloem, the active layers of the tree. Damage to this part of the tree results in canopy dieback. It is usually a slow death, but its continued decline is inevitable.
