maple tree dropping leaves #833145

Asked June 01, 2023, 11:05 AM EDT

I live in Harrison Township and have a very large maple tree in my front yard. Two days ago it began dropping leaves like crazy. It is only June 1st. My whole front yard and porch are covered in leaves. They appear to have a grayish mold on them.  Is there anything I can do? Thanks for your help.

Expert Response

Would you please take 5 or 6 leves, lay them out on a plain sheet( no texture, no printing) and take a couple pictures? Also a picture of the whole tree, from soil line to top branches is helpful.

To add pictures, click the link in your email and go into your question on the website.

Click the “Drop files here or choose them” below the response box to attach them.

You can upload .jpg, .png, .gif, .txt, or .pdf.

NOTE- each picture must be 8mb or less.

It will only let me attach three photos

This kind of looks like maple leaf blister, but all of the photos came through as very small thumbnails. Since I cannot zoom in at all, it's really hard to tell what is going on. Can you verify that you are uploading the original, full resolution images and not "sharing" reduced size photos?

I hope these are better

Yes, this is maple leaf blister. The initial infection occurred earlier, when the weather was cool and wet. Our current hot, dry weather should break the cycle. The tree should recover fine, unless you have problems with defoliation for 2 or 3 years in a row. You can reduce stress on the tree by watering (without getting the leaves wet) to provide the equivalent of 1 inch of rain per week.
