weeping larch showing little growth #832923

Asked May 31, 2023, 11:56 AM EDT

I planted a weeping Larch last Sept which looked fine all Fall. as Iwnter came, it dropped it's needles as expected. Now it's March 31st and there is ONLY growth on some upper branches but very little of it. I would guess that 95% is not showing any needles. I have watered it during the recent dry spell we have had, but wondering what to do next. I am reading that fertilizer should not be applied during the first 2 years after planting?????? I think it is planted in a sunny enough location but am second guessing that reading they like lots of sun., Would think the best bet is to leave it alone hoping it gets established, but would fertilizer help or shocjk it? Any suggestions?

Expert Response

Your larch may yet branch out.  Ensure that it's getting enough sun and watering.  Fertilization is helpful for established plants, so hold off on that for now.  The link below describes how to grow this plant and also discusses several diseases and insects that may harm it.  Read the descriptions so that you can look to see if any of these are impacting your larch tree.  If not, continue good care and wait a bit.
