Miniature Pink Rose - Pruning Tips #832639

Asked May 30, 2023, 8:39 AM EDT

This bush is 15 years old. I am unsure how to prune after the first bloom. The dying blooms are taking away from the beauty of the plant. There are any new new blooms ready to open. I plan to weed around the top of the soil and give it some fresh potting mix. Can you describe the way to prune and which tool to use? Can you recommend a food or fertilizer?

Hi Liz,
Here is the link to our page on pruning roses:
Guide to Pruning Roses | University of Maryland Extension (umd.edu)  For a bush this size, the hand-held ratchet pruner should work fine.
I noticed that there are a fair amount of yellow leaves on this bush.  If it has been in the same pot for several years, it may be time to re-pot it with fresh soil and a larger pot.  Yellow leaves, without other signs of disease, usually indicate root damage,  poor drainage, over watering, improper soil pH or lack of nutrients.
As far as fertilizer, I recommend a slow release organic fertilizer formulated for roses. E.g., Espoma Rose-tone.  Look for a fertilizer with a ratio of either 5-5-5 (5% nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) or 18-24-16 (18% nitrogen, 24% phosphorus, 16% potassium).
