Bug Identification #832486

Asked May 29, 2023, 8:41 AM EDT

Last night my husband was bit/stung by this insect in Mardela Springs, Maryland. He immediately had severe chest pains following the insect bite. We took him to the emergency room, and they determined that the chest pains were not heart related. We are trying to determine what type of insect this is. Unfortunately because he stepped on it, we only have the head of the bug.

Expert Response

Hi,

We're sorry that there was a health incident and hope everything is ok. It is difficult to tell what the insect could be just from the head, however it appears to be a type of click beetle from the shape of the antennae.  As you can see on the link, there are many different species of them in Maryland.

Click beetles are harmless to people, pets, and plants and part of our natural ecosystem.  You can see these profiles on one of the interesting species that are sometimes seen in Maryland:

We are not medical professionals however we don't believe the health emergency was due to the insect and most likely a different cause which has subsided.

Let us know if you see another one of the beetles and can snap a clear photo of it.
