Is this plant dangerous to livestock? #830166

Asked May 15, 2023, 3:37 PM EDT

Hello! We plan to introduce livestock to an area cleared of trees last year. There is a 1.5' - 2' tall plant with yellow flowers that is growing in the disturbed compacted sandy clay soil. We would like to know what it is and if it is dangerous to grazing animals such as goats, cows, sheep, or pigs. And if you see anything else bad in there, please mention it :) Thanks! Tim

Expert Response

This looks like yellow rocket, a member of the mustard family. The flowers should have four petals. It is not toxic and is found in many of our native landscapes. I'm not sure how palatable it is, but some livestock may taste it and decide not to eat any more. If you are making hay, you may want to control this weed so that it doesn't end up in your hay.
