Is this plant a weed or flower and how can it be controlled? #829826

The attached photo shows a plant that is growing extensively in my lawn and yard and it seems all other neighbors' lawns. Can you identify it from the attached picture and tell me how to control it.

John, this is wild violet - a very common plant in lawns and beds in our area.  Some people don't mind them and let them grow.  Their little purple flowers attract tiny pollenating insects, which is good, but they are vigorous and spread quickly.  If you don't dig out all the rhizomes and little bulbs, the plants continue to grow.
