The bees in this photo have moved into a small birdhouse, but I cannot identify them, although they look like bumblebees and do not seem aggressive. I live in Tigard. Should I leave them alone; are they beneficial?
Any info appreciated.

Hi,
Your first instinct is correct. Your birdhouse has become home to bumblebees for this year. Yes, they are beneficial.
Here are some links to further information. First, from the Xerces Society, "Pocket Guide to Identifying the Western Bumblebee". This publication is also from the Xerces Society, "Bumblebee Conservation". And finally, "Top Tips for Bumblebee Identification" from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.
