Trimming magnolia #829120

Asked May 09, 2023, 9:39 AM EDT

Pictured is our Dr. Merrill magnolia tree. I would like to trim it and know that now is the time since it has finished blooming. I would like to have it be wider and not as pointed and tall at the top. I have pictured and marked the area where I’d like to cut it down. We did cut it back two years ago where I’ve circled in the third photo, but it shot up again! Can you give me some guidance in shaping this tree? Thank you

Expert Response

The mature size of your tree is 25' x 25'.  Looking at the photos, I believe your topping the tree has caused a multitude of branches to sprout.  Cutting it back again will only make it worse.  You may want to have a certified arborist make an evaluation and proposal to clean up the excess branches but do not top it again.  https://itrees.com/dr-merrill-magnolia.html  You can find a certified arborist by visiting this site and clicking on Find An Arborist.  Put in your zip code when prompted and a list of certified arborists in your area will
appear.
