HAlf dead azaleas #828134

Asked May 02, 2023, 1:55 PM EDT

Many of the azaleas in my yard are dead or half dead this spring some are only two years old, but some were very established. Any clue what happened?

Carol,
Thanks for contacting the MGVs for recommendations about your azaleas. We’ve had unusual series of winters recently and unfortunately young woody plants suffer from extreme freeze and thaw situations.  Depending on where you got these plants you can see if the tags they provided can be of assistance.  Some azaleas are more hardy than others. Read the tags for growing conditions in your zone.
Pruning dead and split branches may help restore these plants but it will take some time and patience.
You can review these two links for more details on how best to care for your plants. Mulching well before any winter will help keep the roots healthy. The branches may break or split under heavy snow and ice and can be protected with burlap wrap but be careful not to smother them or wrap them too tightly.
Thank you.
