Expert Response
Hello lipnrib,
Thank you for your question. I wish I had a better answer for you but the extensive damage that your pictures show indicates that the tree has suffered catastrophic damage. The possibilities of what could have caused that type of damage are many and if you are interested in finding out the root cause you should submit a sample to your local Cooperative Extension. You are in New Castle County Delaware and I am fairly certain that you are familiar with the location of the office, but just in case - the address is: 461 Wyoming Ave., Newark DE, 19716.
The diagnostic station is through the front door and halfway down the hallway on the right hand side.
The damage is pretty extensive and it is my opinion that even if the tree were to put out blooms this year it would not last the season.
I am sorry for the bad news.
I wish you luck and if you need recommendations for alternate trees to replace that tree with please feel free to contact us here at Ask Extension or you can call our Garden Line @ <personal data hidden>.
Best wishes,
