Pine tree needles and bark looking "dead" at the top - I believe it's a lodgepole. Advise to save it? can I cut the top dead part off?

Expert Response

Hi Lisa:

First of all, do not cut the top of the tree off.  The branches may still be viable.  The damage looks like it was caused by winter drying, which is not unusual in our Central Oregon climate.  I'm attaching a bulletin that goes into further detail on what "winter drying" is, gives tips on prevention, and notes on how to move your tree towards recovery.  Hint, winter watering when the ground is not frozen can be a tremendous help.
