boxwood blight or winterburn? also what the white film? #826435

Asked April 20, 2023, 10:20 AM EDT

Several of my boxwood plants have brown leaves and a white film on them. I am wondering if this is Blight or just winter burn and what is this film? How can I best treat this and restore my plants?

Hello Rosalind,

This looks like a couple things going on.

Firstly, the leaf tan areas look like where there was boxwood leafminer damage-

Look at the backs of the leaves and open one or two carefully—if there are tiny worms( larvae) inside, you have leafminers. Prune back the shrubs by 1/3 or less, pick up all debris  including leaves and mulch under the shrubs, place  in the trash(not compost). You may treat with a pesticide as outlined in the article above. The branches will sprout new leaves if you keep the plant moist when rainfall is lacking. Place new mulch around the shrubs, but don’t allow mulch to touch the trunks.

The white waxy areas could be from boxwood psyllid-https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/boxwood-psyllid  Or from a spider building a small web to catch insects, or from fungi discoloration due to the decay process of the dying leaf.

The pictures are not very clear on my computer and I do not see any black lesions on the stems of the boxwood that would indicate boxwood blight. The leaf lesions do not look like blight either. Compare what you can see with these clear pictures of boxwood blight, here:

To confirm what the shrubs have you may email pictures to MSU Plant and Pest Diagnostic lab:  <personal data hidden>

Please take 12 or so damaged leaves, some with some green on then, and lay them out on a plain sheet of paper in good light(outdoors is ideal). Some leaves should be face up, and some face down.

Take clear pictures, and email your current pictures of the shrubs along with the new ones to the above email address.  They may be able to confirm what is going on if the pictures show enough detail.  Or, they make request branch samples.

When using pesticides, please read and follow all label precautions and directions.
