Magnolia tree damage #826336

Asked April 19, 2023, 1:04 PM EDT

Hi, my magnolia tree lost a large branch in the last snow/ice storm in Minneapolis. I’m wondering what I should do the help protect it? Should I just the remaining bit of the limb all the way to the trunk? Put anything on the broken limb? Thanks for your help!

Expert Response

It's best to cut the branch about 1" away from the main trunk, not flush with it.  If there were smaller branches facing outward and placed lower on the broken branch, cutting just above one of them would be an option.  Your broken branch, however, has no such lesser branches, so it's best to remove it entirely.  To see how to go about pruning, visit

Your tree will still be beautiful.
