Yew discoloration and disease #824541

Asked April 05, 2023, 9:38 AM EDT

Hello,

One of my clients has a two yews that I had planted last fall.  One of them has turned brown, has black decaying needles and a large amount of bark chewed down at the bottom. I am unable to determine what the exact problem is. I am worried that it will spread to the healthy yew next to it.

There is no severe cold winds that pass through. The soil is on the clay side, although rejuvenated when planted to provide more drainage.

Thank you for your help.

Dear Joseph,

If your client’s yew may be in a water-logged location, it could lead to root rot and possible needle decay. I have attached one link that provides some reasons for the yew’s decline. https://soillab.tennessee.edu/whats-wrong-with-my-yew/.

During winter months hungry rabbits or other animals may nibble on shrubs and trees, I have attached a link that provides suggestions on how to deter animals from gnawing on trees.https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/how-protect-trees-and-shrubs-animal-damage-over-winter
