Recently purchased a pear tree from Menards and it's been sitting in our heated garage. yes, it's growing. :( Today found these insect eggs on the ends of the newest growth. Can you tell me what it is and how I can treat it?

Expert Response

Good evening!  Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

You have aphids.  If this tree is sitting anywhere near other plants remove it immediately.  Check any plants in the vicinity.  Flip the leaves and look at the back side.  They will be on the back side or on new buds.

You can return the tree to Menards if it is infested really badly. If it’s too bad, you might not be able to save it.

If you want to try to treat it, get some insecticidal soap.   That is the product I used In my greenhouses to fight aphids.  Put on gloves.  Water the tree first so it isn’t dry.  Read label.  Thoroughly spray both sides of all of the leaves.  They can be dripping.  This will kill the aphids by contact.  Follow instructions on container for respraying if necessary. Keep pets and children away.

For more information on aphids go to extension.umn.edu and search aphids in home yards and gardens.  This will give you some info on what you are fighting.

Good luck!
