finding high bush cranberry on property #823804

Asked March 29, 2023, 9:40 AM EDT

I'd like to find high bush cranberry on a property we own up in Koochiching County, near Northome. I've called the Farm Line but haven't succeeded; hoping for a reliable way to find and identify this plant. Can you help? I'd hoped that an ag agent of some kind nearby could help.

Linda, thank you for your rapid response.  I'm interesting in harvesting some of the bark (traditionally called cramp bark) for medicinal purposes. You probably know it has powerful anti-spasmodic qualities.

Knowing that native plants can be powerful makes me concerned that I'd be harvesting the right bark!

Do you know if there's a master gardener in Koochiching County who might be able to help on-site?  I'd be happy to make a donation to the appropriate organization.

(Reading the material you sent... do you know if the 'European variety' would also have the anti-spasmodic effect?)

Thanks for your thoughts.

Peg, These questions are assigned by computer and I am in Benton County. I do not know any Koochiching County Extension Master Gardeners. You will have to contact them directly.  EMG training is more focused on home vegetable and flower growing and the care of trees and shrubs. I suspect that you will have to do your own online and library research on bark used for medicinal purposes.
