WHAT IS THIS? #823687

Asked March 28, 2023, 9:27 AM EDT

Last summer my lawn was sprayed with Roundup in preparation for a new lawn installation. For 2 1/2 months prior to the installation, if anything green appeared it got hit with Roundup. After my new lawn started growing, unsightly grasses started appearing everywhere and I do mean everywhere, totally ruining the appearance of my new lawn. The seed used was Lesco's All Pro Team Mates Plus. My gut feeling is that this unsightly grass or weed probably was in the topsoil that was brought in. Can anyone identify it so I know how to kill it. It did not die off in the fall. The attached photos were taken 3/27/23. I live in NWOhio where the soil temperature has been below 50 degrees. I have my lawn sprayed each summer professionally with Tenacity and I am hoping it will kill whatever this might be.

Expert Response

After doing some research, I believe you have tall fescue or quack grass. It could have come in the soil you used or the seed. You need to address it pretty quick, because it can spread pretty fast. The best way to eradicate it is to use a non selective post emergent product such as Eraser 41% Glyphosate. Tall fescue, unfortunately, cannot be selectively controlled meaning that you cannot spray it without killing the desirable turf around it. I think I would have my lawn care people come out and help you. Thank you for your question.
