The Right Herbicide #823686

Asked March 28, 2023, 9:16 AM EDT

I am looking for an herbicide or combination herbicides that will not harm violets or clovers. My research so far has found clethodim to be effective and killing grass and butrac can kill broadleaf weeds without harming clover. Could not find information about this priduct on violets. Also it carries Danger label which i try to avoid, Which hercide(s) could you recommend that will not harm clover or violet, but will eliminate most other plants? thank you Chris

Expert Response

Chris,

Clethodim is selective to control grasses and is safe when used as directed on broadleaf species, such as clover and violet, therefore it would be a good choice.

Butrac is not labeled for use on clover and would not be safe. The active ingredient, 2,4-d, selectively controls broadleaf plants, including clover. There are not great options for controlling broadleaf weeds in clover (or violet). Pursuit (active ingredient, imazethapyr) may be an option, but the clover must be established and the efficacy would depend on what weeds you are trying to control. Some weeds are resistant to this group of herbicides. It should also be noted per the label that the application can cause a 'temporary reduction in growth' of the clover. To my knowledge, no herbicides are labeled for violet as it is not a commercial crop that would have gone through the (very expensive) registration process.

I hope this is helpful, please let me know if you have more questions.
