Sick Hemlock? #822839

Asked March 19, 2023, 4:34 PM EDT

Two identical 10' hemlocks were planted, water and fed identically, 10 feet apart in July 2021. During the summer of 2022, both were healthy although midsummer, one started to lighten in color from dark green to green/yellow followed by the needles starting to darken from the bottom up and the trunk out. Needles are still slowly dropping during this winter. At least 1/3 of the needles are now dead and fallen. The other tree is 100% green and not one brown needle. What would you suggest?

Expert Response

Dear Ronald,

From what you have indicated in your message, and from the picture you sent indicating your hemlock’s needle loss, it could be hemlock woolly adelgid disease.

Your best bet to confirm the true condition, is to consider hiring a certified arborist to come on site and assess your tree. Determining how to treat hemlock needle loss is a specialty of arboriculture. On the ISA website, arborists with the designation of “risk assessment” is a specialty that you need. The website to search for these arborists is www.treesaregood.org.
