What are these Weird Bulbs or Galls surrounding wild rose bush stems? #821337

Asked February 28, 2023, 2:29 PM EST

I found these strange looking bulbs surrounding my wild rose bush stems. I could only see them clearly in fall and winter since all the leaves dropped off. Another colleague said they might be galls but one is very large and the others have no hair. What are these?

Expert Response

From the pictures the best I can determine it the plant has a Crown Gall. I found some reliable websites on these galls and listed them below. If you are curious about the contents of the galls, cut them open and see what is inside.

I wish you success in controlling these growths on your roses.
