Will the "shaded" side of blue spruce recover? #821110

Asked February 25, 2023, 11:12 AM EST

About 20 years ago my neighbor and I planted spruce trees along our property lines. I believe that they are Norway Spruce. At the time the spacing seemed good but as time passed, the trees grew together. The sides of the trees where they grew together are bare since no sunlight could penetrate. I am planning to remove some of my trees to build a garage and I know that the bare side of my neighbor's trees will be exposed. Will the side of these trees ever recover and turn green? If so, how long would this take?

Expert Response

Once the needles are gone they do not come back on spruce trees.  You could trim them all so they look the same.  Also removing them will allow air flow to keep any diseases from transferring from tree to tree.
