help with muscadine disease #820767

Asked February 20, 2023, 6:11 PM EST

Hi, I pruned a “Triumph” muscadine vine this winter and I noticed that one of the stumps has turned black. I’ve attached a picture. Is this something the vine can resist itself? Or is there some treatment I should try? It’s just a small vine I have growing on a trellis at home.

Expert Response

It is possible that what you are seeing is the result of sap leaking from a pruning cut.  Sap provides an environment that allows both harmless and possibly harmful organisms to colonize (unable to identify from the picture provided).  Usually sap bleeding is not a problem in a healthy vine.  You can monitor the wound or prune out the affected area.  The link below will provide additional information.
