What is eating my African violet? Could it be a lady bug? (Have a few in the house.)

Expert Response

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension service. It does appear by your photo that something is taking bites out of your leaves.  Have you inspected all areas of the plant? Is it affecting the flowers and stems? I would also inspect your soil.

I am unsure which pest might be doing this damage. I am including a link to common pests of houseplants with a link to the U of M Extension yard and garden website: https://extension.umn.edu/product-and-houseplant-pests/insects-indoor-plants#scale-insects-1581110 Please click on the link.

I will attach another link to lady beetle information: https://extension.umn.edu/beneficial-insects/lady-beetles#sources-3145860. This information indicates that lady beetles feed on other small insects and do not eat your plants. So I would rule out lady beetle damage.

From the photo, it appears that large bites have been taken from the leaves. I am unable to find any information about a critter indoors that will do that.

Here is a link to the African Violet Society website on the 10 top bugs that infect African Violets.

If you find more clues as you inspect your plant more closely, feel free to respond with more information.

Hopefully the above information will give you some additional clues.

Good Luck
