Japanese Honeysuckle? #819750

Asked February 04, 2023, 3:27 PM EST

I recently learned about the invasive Japanese Honeysuckle. Could you verify if the attached photo is that plant? The photo was taken over the summer. I do not see it on the fence today.

Expert Response

Although the image is too small for us to enlarge, it does appear to be Japanese Honeysuckle. If it helps, all Honeysuckle (genus Lonicera) growing wild in Maryland with the exception of Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens, which looks different than the others) are non-native and invasive. (Technically there are two other native species, but they're so rare and limited in distribution that it's unlikely a gardener would encounter either of them.) Japanese Honeysuckle can be a long-lived vine-like shrub, so unless it was deliberately removed, it will probably regrow this year. Our web page about this weed links to some publications that discuss removal options (usually herbicide treatments or oft-repeated cutting).
