Roots above ground Dawn Redwood #819562

Asked February 01, 2023, 8:49 AM EST

I had a large Dawn Redwood tree moved with a tree spade in 2016 at my house in Port Clinton Ohio. The tree is thriving but roots are growing out of the ground in the shape of balls and I’m afraid if they get bigger I will hit them with my lawnmower. Can I cut these roots off without endangering the tree? How many can I trim

Expert Response

Those look like the "knees" on a bald cypress.  If this is definitely a Dawn Redwood, this rooting is probably due to the roots unable to grow properly in the soil.   This could be due to hardpan soil, high water table, or maybe the soil was compacted with the tree spade.  Trimming roots is not a good idea, but to get the best answer about if and how many roots can be damaged, a certified arborist is the best to ask.  https://ohiochapterisa.org/aws/OCISA/pt/sp/trees4ohio_find-an-arborist
