A mourning dove that landed on my deck had a red lump above its beak (see two photos), as opposed to its mate, which had no such lump (one photo). Any idea what that could be?

Unfortunately we don't have information on wildlife health matters, but perhaps a wildlife rehabber in your area would be familiar with this condition, or maybe a wildlife biologist with the MD Dept. of Natural Resources.
