Expert Response

This appears to be the invasive shrub Wineberry, a relative of blackberry and raspberry. It's common and widespread in Maryland, unfortunately, and the linked gallery page can provide more traits for comparison once it leafs-out, if you wanted to wait to verify its ID or if you find more during the growing season. The resources list on the first linked page will provide removal options; essentially, you'll need to either repeatedly dig it up or cut it down to the ground (each time it resprouts) to exhaust the roots so the plant dies out, or treat its foliage with a systemic herbicide that will kill the roots. Being tenacious, Wineberry may require more than one application, and use any such herbicide carefully since contact with the foliage of desirable plants can damage them.
