Potting tulips #819112

Asked January 24, 2023, 2:07 PM EST

Is it too late to pot tulips bulbs now? I have a bunch left over that I couldn’t get into the ground before winter. (Some have green sprouts growing even the bag.) Is it worth it to try and pot them? If I do pot them and they grow, would I be able to replant them in the spring so they could naturalize? (Some are a special type of tulip that I ordered online because they aren’t common.) Thank you!

Expert Response

They can be potted up, they usually need a cold period to bloom.

Try a few bulbs with each treatment. There are also you tube videos describing how to force bulbs.
Good luck! Since you have the bulbs it is worth giving it a try. If you plant them in the spring they won’t bloom next year but may the year after. I have had some luck with restoring bulbs to normal performance.

Dear Evelyn,

Thank you very much. That especially was nice to hear of your experience with the bulbs!

You are welcome. Good luck.
Hello, Evelyn,

Back in January, I asked you if it was too late to plant tulip bulbs, and you said to give it a try.  Look what’s here now!!!!  Thank you!
