What is this tree and fruit/nut/seed? #817757

Asked December 25, 2022, 10:05 PM EST

Hello, I live in the Minneapolis Longfellow neighborhood and there are a lot of these black things on the ground right now, which my dog likes to grab and try eating (I attached the branch and nut/fruit along with the tree). I have started putting a muzzle on him for walks because he still hasn't learned "drop it." Thanks for any info you can provide!

Expert Response

Good morning!  Thank you for using Ask extension.  This is what I found about your tree.
this is a Wingleaf soapberrySapindus saponariaWingleaf soapberry (Sapindus saponaria) is a deciduous tree native to North America and South America. The Latin name Sapindus saponaria means soapy. The fruit from this tree is irritating to the skin and toxic. Caution should be exercised around livestock. The wood from this tree can be made into baskets.

I think you are wise to keep your dog away from this tree and branches, etc.
I hope I have helped!

Thank you for your quick response! I will keep using the muzzle. There are so many trees around here that are toxic to dogs, even in the parks (such as ginkgo). Will have to continue working on "leave it" too :)

It’s too bad we have to have dangerous things around, but I guess that’s the way it is!
