Growth on Marigold stems #817052

Asked November 29, 2022, 8:25 PM EST

Late in the season, nodules developed on the stems of marigolds. What is the growth, and if it is a diease, will the pathogen overwinter?

Montgomery County Maryland

Expert Response

This is a type of bacterial disease.
It is caused by one of several possible agro-bacteria, that can cause those swellings, which are referred to as 'galls'.
The plant could have come in with the pathogen but they are also normal within our soils and only occasionally cause a problem.

We suggest a good clean up of the plant and area. Bag up the affected plants along with the mulch layer, (and some soil if there was no mulch), and put it in the trash.
Next year, plant something else in that area.
