Aloe vera winterizing #816978

Asked November 28, 2022, 10:40 AM EST

Hi, We have 4 aloe vera plants that are in the ground (not potted.) What is the best way to winterize them and what can we do when there is a frost/freeze? Thanks!

Expert Response

Can you send some pictures of the plants so I have an idea of their size.

Thanks,

It's a 7 gallon pot next to the aloe vera.

  • Make sure there is adequate soil moisture prior to a freeze.
  • You have 2 options to cover the plant
    • Cover with a sheet or blanket, use bricks, pins or planks to keep the blanket in place so it doesn't blow away.
    • If that 7g pot is large enough, invert it over the plant and add some weight to keep it from blowing off. That will be a quick and easy solution.
Thanks for the question.

Thanks for the advise!  The aloe vera survived - even if it's looking a little worse for the wear.  (See attached photo.)
