Brown bug in house #816962
Asked November 27, 2022, 8:02 PM EST
Hello,
We have been finding these bugs in our house, especially in potted plants, for a couple of months. They come out in the evening mostly and tend to hang out in dark areas underneath things like furniture, toys. I've been searching google and can't figure out what this is.
Thank you for any help,

Expert Response
Hi Christine,
This insect is a seed bug. My best guess as to the species is Pseudopamera nitidula. As per the name, they typically feed on the seed pods of plants. Just like stinkbugs, seed bugs often make their way into homes through cracks around windows/doorways and seek out dark, cozy spaces to spend the winter months in a dormant state. They are not known to feed on houseplants or to be pests of humans. To control them, I recommend making sure that all entrances into the house are properly sealed, especially areas around windows. The adults can be vacuumed up. Let me know if you have further questions, I hope this helps.
