Greenest way to get rid of creeping buttercup #816956

Asked November 27, 2022, 5:37 PM EST

My lawn is full of creeping buttercup. Can I kill it by covering my lawn with newspaper and then a layer of mulch? Can it still survive under cover?

Multnomah County Oregon

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Cody.  Creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens) is a perennial plant that has a prolific underground system, and an above-ground system of stolons, which cannot be destroyed using this method (solarization).  Here is a comprehensive article about the plant and various control mechanisms:  https://kingcounty.gov/services/environment/animals-and-plants/noxious-weeds/weed-identification/creeping-buttercup.aspx
I hope this helps.  Good luck!
