Apple problem #816556

Asked November 16, 2022, 4:00 PM EST

Several of our apples have this problem - they look just fine but when we cut them open the seed core is bad. It does not affect the flavor and hasn't spread (yet). What is causing this and can we prevent it?

Clay County Minnesota

Expert Response

It is possible that this is moldy core, which is caused by a type of fungus. Some types of apples are more susceptible to this. Certain weather conditions can have an impact and may make this type of fungal infection more likely. Some manage the issue by using fungicides.
