Red maple tree bark turn black falling off #816149

Dear Sir or Madam,
I have a red maple (possibly autumn flame?) tree with bark that has turned black and is peeling off. The tree has been planted in its location for about 25 years. This year I have seen the bark turning black and breaking off. There are some borer-like holes, but i could only find about 5 of those holes. I’m attaching pictures of the black bark (shady side of yard facing N to NW, a shell shaped growth on the still-gray side facing sunny SE side, and some bugs (didn’t seem to be alive still) that were under the bark. Could you help me with how to treat whatever is affecting the tree so I can save it? Thank you

Expert Response
The pictures show your tree is in serious stress. It could be a fungal infection such as verticillium fungus or steganosporium. Judging from the pictures it appears the tree has fungus on the bark among possible other problems. The tree may be saved but it depends how far long this problem has existed. The picture of the mushrooms on the bark tell me something serious is going on. Some sprays may help but i would contact a certified arborist. Another option would be to contact your local Ohio State extension office. Take your pictures with you.
