Identify tree by the bark #815736

Asked November 02, 2022, 10:21 AM EDT

Hello, I am a Spartan grad in Horticulture Landscape Design/Build '95. Go Green! My wife and both my children are Spartans as well. While not in Horticulture as a career now, I am very involved in gardening and woodworking. A friend gave me some dried lumber and I am unable to identify the species. I am wondering if someone in the Extension organization can help me. I have attached pictures. Thank you in advance! Paul

Expert Response

Hi Paul,
My apologies for the delay.
It looks like black cherry. The horizontal lenticels, or openings through which trees respire, in the bark are typical of black cherry. So are the large growth rings.
I realize this may be too late. Please do let me know if you already had this identified - and if it is confirmed black cherry!
Thank you,
-Julie

Thank you Julie!   Very much appreciate the response.  We had a hunch it was in the cherry family.  We are in the process of fully drying the wood.  (The pictures I sent were it stickered and ready to go into the dryer).  It is becoming a bar top for a very unique vintage trailer bar being made by my father-in-law.  I will send you pictures when it is complete if you like.

Thank you.

Paul

Will be sure to send.  Here is the template installed that will be the Black Cherry boards.

Take care and thank you.
