Asked October 26, 2022, 1:39 PM EDT

Hello, could you help me identify what these tiny bugs I found on my carpet and on items I had on my floor? I have not seen them before! Photos are taken with a macro lens. Bug is about the size of a pinhead.

Expert Response

Hi April,
Nice job on the photos!
That is an aphid (Order: Hemiptera, Family: Aphididae). I can't tell genus or species from a photo.
Aphids feed exclusively on plant sap, so they can damage plants, but they don't bite people or pets or do any damage to household belongings other than plants.
If you have houseplants, you could check them for more of these insects. Otherwise, the aphids probably just accidentally got indoors and they won't cause you any troubles.

Hope that helps!
Yours,
