Redbud sapling needs to be relocated #814538

Asked October 17, 2022, 7:09 PM EDT

Is this (mid-October) a safe time to move this redbud sapling to a better spot, or should I wait til spring?

Expert Response

You can move it now. Deciduous shrubs and trees can be moved fairly late into autumn as long as the ground isn't frozen, even after their leaves shed. Still, we suggest you move it at your earliest opportunity so it has as much time as possible to re-establish roots before pausing root growth for winter. Keep as many roots intact as you can when digging it out so it will experience less transplant shock, though a minor amount of root damage/loss is typical when moving plants from one site to another, and they usually recover from that well.
