What kinda larvae is this? #814414

Asked October 16, 2022, 6:05 PM EDT

Found this larave when when cut down our cherry tree. Curious as to what it is... Or will be I should say. Should we be concerned for any reason. I'm assuming no but just want to make sure.

Expert Response

The picture you sent shows what looks like the Cherry-Peach tree-borer, Synanthedon exitiosa. Would I be correct that you found the larva in the wood of the tree when it was cut down? Was the cherry tree in poor health? Do you remember if you saw what looked like a black wasp flying around the tree? Unless you have more cherry, peach or other stone fruit trees you do not need to be concerned. If you have some of the other trees let me know and I can give you some suggestions to protect those trees.

These are the only two things that kind of resemble a wasp that have been around the recently cut cherry tree, that was indeed in poor health and being taken over by ivy, which is why we had to cut it down sadly.
Although we do not have any stone fruit presently we wanted to replace the cherry tree so any advice would be wonderful! Thank you so much for taking the time.

Neither of the two pictures are of the cherry tree borer. A couple of questions to help me give the best information I can. Did you fine the larva in wood of the cherry tree, that is, was it boring into the wood? How old was the cherry tree?

Check this web site at:  Cherry-Peachtree borer | Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks (pnwhandbooks.org)

This will give you some good information to know if you decide to plant more cherry trees in the future. Do let me know if you have questions about any of the information.
