Holes in dirt on farm #814368

Asked October 16, 2022, 8:17 AM EDT

Twice this week I’ve come onto the small horse farm I work on and found a series of holes out back. It looks like maybe something digging for grubs. They are dug holes not mole tunnels. Do you have any idea what they could be and how I can prevent it in the future?

Julia,

Greetings from the Jessamine County Extension Office. Thanks for sending the question and pictures! You are correct that some critter is searching for grub worms. It is difficult to know exactly what, but if I was to guess, it is either turkey or opossum. You may want to set out a trail camera to see if you can capture an image.

There are a couple of things you may try. First, you may consider applying grub control granules to the area to make it less attractive to the foraging animals. Another idea would be to install a security light with a motion sensor in the area to deter the animals that are most likely coming at night.

If you have any more questions, you can call me at<personal data hidden> M-F, 8:00a-4:30p.
