Freeze #813357

Asked October 06, 2022, 7:32 AM EDT

We have a freeze forecast for tomorrow (Friday) night. A few late veggies still remain in the garden. Specifically cabbage, beets, carrots, kale, lettuce, peppers, eggplant, basil, oregano and rosemary. We grow on hugelkulturs and in raised beds, two feet tall. There’s also one bed of Swiss chard, and a late zucchini down in the ground. What specifically needs to come in before the freeze? Thank you, Jan S.

Expert Response

Thanks for your question. The plants mentioned can be protected with row cover material. This is a special material that allows the sun to penetrate and the plants to breathe. Unlike plastic covering, it prevents the build-up of too much heat that plastic coverings do.

I’ll be organizing additional information for you but I wanted to give you a quick response before a potential frost hits. Protecting plants with row cover material can provide growth of plants well into winter weather.

I have listed several links below that will explain the advantages of using row covers along with photos to give you ideas on how to best utilize them. I have listed your County OSU Extension Service also should you wish to contact them for additional help or information.
