Lost rose???? #813338

Asked October 05, 2022, 9:28 PM EDT

I have caterpillars (leaf rollers?) eating all the leaves off of a rose bush. 98% of the leaves were lsot in less than two weeks. WIll this rose survive winter and or come back in the spring, or is it lost? How should I treat it now and in the future? Many thanks. Harvey Beute

Expert Response

Hi Harvey,

Can you take a few pictures of the pests and send them to me? I can't recommend a pesticide if I don't know what the pest is.

I think the roses will survive the winter despite the pests eating the leaves. It is late enough in the season that the roses should have stored enough nutrients in their tissues to be able to push out new growth next spring.

If they do not survive the winter, it might not be because of the pest damage--it could be because we get excessively cold this winter, or another factor. I know you don't want something eating the plant, and we need to solve that, but roses often do not come through Michigan winters. Roses do not do well with the dry winter winds and extreme temperature fluctuations.

Can you send me photos of the bugs? If you can, we can narrow down your pest identification and help you figure out what to do about it now or in the future.

Thanks,
