Tree identification #813326

Can you please help me identify this tree? Is it a Hackberry? Thank you!

Expert Response

It's not a Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) as the bark, foliage, and fruits are too different, but it's hard to nail-down what species this is. The fruits resemble Crabapple (Malus; many species and hybrid cultivars); the foliage is less clear. Some wild cherry species (Prunus; either native or escaped non-native seedlings) have foliage and fruits with similar characteristics, but we don't see the typical glands present at the base of cherry leaf blades, though perhaps they're just not clearly visible here. Hawthorn can have fruit clusters somewhat like this before ripening to red, but the foliage is usually shaped differently. Our best guess is a Crabapple of some sort.
