Clover lawn #813312

Asked October 05, 2022, 5:14 PM EDT

Hello, Is there someone who could consult and possibly help me establish a pollinator friendly, maybe clover, lawn in St. Albans? I'd be willing to pay. Are there students or professionals able to visit and consult? Thank you.

Expert Response

Good Morning Phyllis,

While we can't recommend specific landscapers, Vermont Nursery and Landscapers maintains a site with information about all landscapers in the state! You can check that out here: https://vnlavt.org/

Incidentally, I converted two acres of land from lawn to a pollinator friendly habitat through a process of mowing the entire area once every spring, just as soon as the ground is firm enough to drive a mower on. No overseeding or new planting required!

After just a few years, we had over forty different flowering plants and a large number of native pollinators, even though we're surrounded by commercial dairy farms.

For more information, one of our friends out in Minnesota put together this great resource for folks trying to do just what you're doing: https://ask2.extension.org/kb/faq.php?id=738271

Hope this helps!

Hello Ricky,
Thank you so much for your very helpful and prompt response! Can you tell me what overseeding means?  Does it mean to just add more seed to an existing lawn? Also, do you know of anyone who lives near Saint Albans who might be willing to take a look at my lawn? I could use some advice. I'd also love to see some clover lawns. Do you know of anyone who might be willing to show me theirs?

I learned best through actually talking to people and getting inspiration. I can look online forever but end up never making a decision!

Do you think it's not too late to plant some clover this fall?

Thank you again for your help!

Good Morning Phyllis,

Sorry for the delay! I was waiting to hear back from someone in the program!

It seems we don't really have a network to connect folks who want to visit each other's gardens (or lawns), but I'd suggest just asking around. If you're taking a walk and a see a yard/field/garden that stands out to you, see if you can find the owner. In my experience, everyone wants to talk about their garden!

As for overseeding, the second resource I sent you should be a big help! Here it is again: https://ask2.extension.org/kb/faq.php?id=738271

Additionally, inspired by your question, I've begun work on a guide to convert lawns to pollinator habitats which will hopefully be on the master gardener site in a few months!

Hope this helps!

Hello again, Ricky. That is great you've been inspired to start a guide resource.
Last night I just sprinkled some clover seeds on my lawn ad an experiment,  so I'll be interested to see if any come up in the spring.

Thank you again for your help!
