Is it too late to sow rye seed? #813278
Asked October 05, 2022, 1:49 PM EDT
Is it too late to plant a cover crop of rye in my raised boxes at a community garden? The boxes contain strawberry plants which I'm going to remove because they are more than 4 years old and are not producing many strawberries. Also, if I can sow the rye seed now, how much seed should I buy? The boxes measure 19 feet long and 6 feet wide (114 sq. ft.)
Baltimore County Maryland
Expert Response
We're at the end of the recommended window of time for sowing autumn-planted cover crops, but you can still do so now since this crop will tolerate late sowing. For the size of area you wish to cover, about five ounces of winter rye seed should be sufficient. You can explore our Cover Crops page for more information, if needed.
